This painting was inspired by my complicated relationship with East Hastings, a place that feels deeply alive, layered, and impossible to experience in just one way. There is beauty in its character, architecture, movement, and history, but there is also a heaviness that stays with you. I wanted to capture that tension, the way one street can hold both familiarity and discomfort at the same time.

For me, East Hastings reflects a very real part of day to day city life in Vancouver. It is not polished or distant. It is raw, human, and honest. I made this piece to sit with that love and hate relationship, and to acknowledge how some places can challenge you while still becoming part of how you understand a city.

Living in Vancouver, sunsets often become part of everyday life in such a quiet but meaningful way. They appear at the end of long days, during evening walks, after work, or on drives by the water, reminding us to slow down and take in what is right in front of us. This painting is about that small daily experience and the sense of calm and gratitude it can bring.
