One thing I have really loved about being in Vancouver is randomly walking into bakeries and getting distracted by the dessert display. This painting came from that exact kind of feeling.
 
I wanted to paint the slice almost like you are looking at it through the glass, with all the layers of sponge, cream, and strawberries completely on show. I especially loved painting the strawberries tucked between each layer because they make the cake feel slightly imperfect and real instead of overly polished.
 
It is basically about that tiny moment of seeing a dessert you absolutely did not plan on buying and immediately changing your mind.
