Vancouver sunsets became one of those things I never really got tired of. Even after years of living here, there were evenings when the sky would suddenly open into these intense oranges, yellows, blues, and purples and make an ordinary day feel completely different.
I painted this one less as an exact landscape and more as the feeling of watching the sun disappear over the water. The loose, fast brushstrokes let the sky and ocean almost blur into each other, while the light at the horizon becomes the focus of the entire painting.
It is one of my larger studies of the Vancouver sky, painted from the memory of those evenings when everything seems to glow for just a few minutes before it is gone.
